I was born in 1980 in Maidstone kent, and grew up at Tan-Yr-Allt in North Wales, where myself and my brother were home schooled by our parents. I followed in my parent’s footsteps and in 2005 graduated from Goldsmiths college with a degree in textiles. I now live and work from my studio in East London.
My current work is based in and around the idea of the “shrine” or the “souvenir” and at current this idea is explored through the form of the book or the box. From these books/boxes unravels an intimate narrative, both inspired and derived from personal memories and intertwined with traditional folklore and fairytales. With the essence and feel of reality and make believe that is taken from staging and the atmosphere and magic of visiting a theatre.
As well as my sculptural works, I also make smaller pieces that are both functional and wearable, playing with the idea of a souvenir or shrine that is to be carried about on one’s body or clothing, either in memory of something or someone or for good luck or protection. My “Once Upon A Time” recycled accessories collection consists of one of jewellery pieces and altered journals and albums. These like my other works are made using found and abandoned fabrics and objects, and I use stitch to combine the various different pieces together to create a somewhat familiar narrative.
