Scroll Book. Date, WIP. Size 260cm x 43cm. I have always made things. Drawing and painting as a child was a constant for me. As was the making of fabric and paper collaged and stitched books. Book making is still important to me. This long padded and quilted book is made from the back of a discarded quilt found in a very dirty state at a market in Cornwall. I finally got the courage to handwash it and was excited to see it get a new lease of life. Scroll Book is a landscape map of the area where I work in South London and is inspired by a selection of hand drawn maps from the London Museum Docklands. Displayed here, with the threads, fabrics and tools I am using to make the work.

Deconstructed Silk Jacket-Coverlet. Date, 2024. Size, 67cm x 58cm. Collecting fabric, especially items of clothing, is a huge part of my making process and often the initial inspiration for a piece. I prefer to stumble across items at antique markets or junk shops. I like the stories that go with the material and my story of finding them. Precious fabric is usually shared between many artworks. Each piece is time intensive and physically demanding. Unlike a lot of my work which is built from different fragments of fabric, this piece is made from a single silk jacket. Deconstructed slowly over time, it was then pieced, tacked and stitched back together over twelve months. I then worked back into the surface, using satin and seed stitches in vintage and found threads.

Table in a Landscape – A Space of Your Own. Date, 2021-2022. Size, 125cm x 124cm A delicate and somewhat fragmented piece, a network of scraps of memory, real-life events and symbolic motifs, all held in place with many stitches. An experimental work. Built on and into a thin grey linen fabric, this is how I spent my lock down. Placed, pieced, appliquéd, stitched and embroidered between my East London home and Columbia Road Shop during the Covid pandemic. Threads are a mix of DMC Mouliné Spécial embroidery thread, and vintage and found threads and strings. This was originally rolled up with a lot of threads and fabric scraps and packed ready to travel with me as I flew to the USA to run a series of embroidery classes. I still wonder what it would have become if I had started stitching it on my flight as planned. Instead, I started it at home. This time was life changing for me. It was the start of this exhibition and a new journey as a maker. I began to work freely, playing and experimenting with scale and techniques.
